Pocket Guide: Albany, Western Australia

What's good about it? Albany, Western Australia's southernmost city and first settlement, overlooks Princess Royal Harbour. Established in 1826 as a military garrison, it has rich stories of Aboriginal owners, convicts, sailors and whalers.
Best for: Head to Albany's National Anzac Centre, a WWI museum overlooking the harbour where 41,000 departed for battle. Set in Princess Royal Fortress, it features multimedia exhibits and historic artifacts. Then, visit Australia's last operating whaling station on board the Cheynes IV, the world's only preserved whale chaser. Travel by motor coach to Waikelongup Flat, an Aboriginal Heritage Site.
