What's good about it? Shimizu, a scenic city on Suruga Bay in Japan's Shizuoka, is watched over by the imposing Mount Fuji. Its economy thrives on fishing and green tea exports.

Best for: Beyond the city, head to Kunzan Tsh-g, Japan's oldest Shinto shrine. Founded in 1617, it is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the leader who unified Japan after civil war. Take a scenic drive to Mount Fuji and marvel at its iconic observation cone. Learn about its significant history at the World Heritage Centre. Enjoy a traditional Japanese lunch and explore Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, an example of Edo-period architecture and the traditional starting point for pilgrims.

Best time to visit: Go in spring from March to May for cherry blossoms and in autumn from September to November for fall foliage.
