Luna has been revealed as the most popular dog name as new data shows most Australians are sticking to the classics.

Bupa Pet Insurance has released the top dog names registered on its policies from January to September 2023.

As well as declaring the most popular names, it also uncovered the interesting sources of inspiration people take for their pooch's identity.

One hound was named after the Brazilian-Portuguese footballer PEPE while others were a tribute to late US basketball star Kobe Bryant.

Movies were a bountiful source with character names such as Yoda, Thor, Tinkerbell, Woody and Buzz, while designer brands such as Gucci and Chanel also featured.

Others were led by their stomachs with Bagel, Chilli, Oreo, Biscuit and Peanut popular, as well as alcohol inspired names Bundy, Whiskey, Brandy and Bubbles.

"Just like some children's names, some pet names can divide popular opinion," Bupa's Shannon Orbons said.

"Perhaps that's why classic names continue to top the list, though the trend for more unique dog names continues to grow.

"So, if you're in your local off-leash park and you call out 'Luna' or 'Daisy', and some other friendly neighbourhood dogs run up to you, you'll now know why."
