Kakadu Bird Week coincides with the mass migration of magpie geese in the region.

Did you know Kakadu National Park - about two hours' drive east of Darwin - is home to more than a third of Australia's bird species? Indeed, from wandering magpie geese and elegant sea eagles to bright-coloured kingfishers and black-necked jabirus, they all call this part of the world home.

There are few better places to see them in action than the Yellow Water Billabong, where dramatic wildlife scenes unfold every day at dawn and dusk. And there are few better times of the year to take in the theatre than Kakadu Bird Week (September 28 to October 3) which coincides with the mass migration of magpie geese in the region. And the news gets better: well-known twitcher Luke Paterson of NT Bird Specialists is offering special birdwatching tours from $195 per person during this week, making the most of this incredible time of the year in Kakadu. ntbirdspecialists.com.au

Terminal bliss

Meanwhile, if you're heading to the East Coast of the US - or for that matter anywhere else in the country - via LA, then we have some good news for you. The $US2.3 billion ($3.5 billion) Delta Sky Way at LAX project has just been completed, linking Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport with the Tom Bradley International Terminal via moving airside walkways. This means you don't have to take buses between the two terminals (yay, no queues) and get an opportunity to stretch your legs and do some "exercise" between the flights.
