When it comes to Sydney's coolest suburbs, the former rag trade centre of inner-city Surry Hills is right up there, bristling with destination shops, restaurants, galleries and bars and, our favourite, a vintage movie house - the Golden Age Cinema and Bar (trust us, put it on your to-do list). As of this month, there's a shiny new place to lay your head in the heart of this cultural playground - the designer ADGE hotel on Riley Street, minutes from bustling Oxford Street. Its signature is eclectic furnishings and bold colour - lots of it, including in the lobby's Korean cafe Soul Deli, which has pink-tiled tabletops, pale-yellow booths and, we are informed, queues forming out the door. A large-scale mural at the entry by Australian artist Adrian Hing is also turning heads.

The brand new hotel building houses 93 guestrooms with pod-style bathrooms; when the renovation of the former Cambridge Hotel next door is completed next year, guestrooms will number 242. Introductory rates start at $199 a night. adgehotel.com.au
