Rome may be an ancient city, but its hotel scene is anything but, with a number of stellar new establishments - from Six Senses to Bulgari - opening in the past few months. The latest to join the fray is hotelier Ian Schrager's Edition - a boutique 91-room gem, just a couple of minutes' walk from the city's most famous street, Via Veneto, and within easy reach of historic icons such as the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.

While the guestrooms are textbook Schrager with lashings of wood and a pared-back palette, common areas drum up the drama - think bright-green drapes in the lobby (pictured) and ink-blue booths at Anima restaurant. Housed in a building dating back to the 1940s, the hotel has incorporated many of the original architectural features - from a central courtyard to a showstopping marble staircase - into its design. But, perhaps, the most coveted spot here is the rooftop bar on the seventh floor, with mesmerising views of the Eternal City. editionhotels.com
