Coffee roasting is a booming business in regional Australia. Here's where to find the best beans

If you're on a road trip or live regionally, it's time to switch to a local roaster.

Here's your guide to the best places in eastern regional Australia to pick up your next bag of beans from.

Floozy Coffee

Newcastle-based Floozy began as a micro roaster in 2017. Now, it is a booming business with a pink cafe to match. There are espresso blends available, along with omni roasts that can be used for almost any type of coffee. Bonus points given for very colourful packaging.

Full Circle Coffee Roasters

This Wagga Wagga roaster in the state's Riverina is honouring the town's history of coffee roasting - in fact, it's built on the same site as a coffee company that began 20 years ago. Here, you'll find blends named after countries, like Italy and Brazil.

"The blend I'd recommend to most people - one of my favourites is called 'The Good Stuff', Full Circle's owner, Lachie told ACM. This blend has sweet fruit flavours and medium acidity.

Morgan's Coffee Roasters

This family-owned business has been roasting since 2004 and can be found at the foothills of the Blue Mountains. It sources, imports and roasts beans from around the world, including Brazil, Ethiopia, Sumatra and India. There are staple blends available, along with rotating single origin roasts. You can try some bean to bar chocolate from the co-owned chocolate maker when you visit the cafe.

Academy Coffee

Heading further west? Orange's Academy Coffee offers a range of roasts. Their website explains the process for growing, drying and roasting each of their single origin beans, so you can learn more about what is going in your cup.

Karon Farm Coffee

Most of us know Melbourne as Australia's coffee capital, but there are great places just outside the city. Karon Farm Coffee, in Gordon, began as a hobby in 2003. It now specialises in sustainably-sourced roasts that you can enjoy in your morning cup.

Piccolo Coffee Roasters

This Warrnambool-based company can be recognised by its vintage-style packaging. The roastery was started by an ex-teacher and tradesman. It now supplies to many cafes in Victoria with a focus on espresso blends.

Geelong Coffee Roasters

Our next pick is located where the name suggests - in Geelong. It has light blends, along with popular chocolate or caramel-flavoured blends to use in your morning cappuccino. There's also the Sunrise blend that tastes like roasted marshmallow. You can give this one a try by ordering online.

The Colombian Coffee Co.

This Buderim-based roaster features an iconic mule on its packaging. Here, you'll find great single origins and blends made from Colombian beans.

"Our house blend ... is made for Queensland preferences. It's very sweet, it's got a lot of body, with hints of chocolate and hazelnut and caramel," owner Dani said. "It's the coffee we have been selling the most for the last nine years."

White Whale Coffee Roasters

This company was founded by an environmental scientist and carpenter almost 13 years ago and is said to be one of the first roasters in Cairns. A rebrand in 2019 came with a new name, designed to customers to care for their environment.

First Batch Coffee Roasters

Based in Noosaville, this company offers a range of blends, single origins and filter roasts. You can also find organic coffee from Colombia, ready for your morning brew. First Batch's sister company, The Coffee Training Co., is a great place to refine your barista skills.

"We're currently offering two single origins, a Brazilian coffee and an Ethiopian," owner Brent said. "The Brazilian is the one that I'm loving the most ... it's amazing through a filter but still really good with milk, which is really, really unusual."
