Setting sail from Australia, these ships are the pick of the crop next wave season.

Birds aren't the only ones that migrate for the summer. Cruise ships do it, too, following the warmer weather across the globe. During Australia's summertime "wave season", from November to March, several dozen international cruise ships operate out of local ports before moving to the northern hemisphere as the weather warms up there.

So if you are keen to try one of the fresh crop of ships setting new standards in design and facilities, it is time to start planning for next summer. Here's a guide.

Why we are excited: Disney Wonder, the first of the Disney Cruise ships to head Down Under, promises plenty of fun for the whole family with Broadway-style shows, pirate-night parties and, of course, photo opportunities with your favourite Disney characters. Teens will love the Marvel super hero Academy, while parents who want some me-time are catered for with adults-only areas including a pool and spa.

The elegant Regent Seven Seas Explorer lifts the luxury to the next level. Not only does it have one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios at sea (it's almost 1:1 in this instance) , but every cabin onboard is a suite that comes complete with its own balcony.

Why we are excited: Sleek interiors and plenty of greenery are the first signs that Celebrity Edge is not your average cruise ship.
