Lost Blue Mountains bushwalkers emerge from wilderness

There were concerns for Alfred Zawadzki, 69, and Klaus Umland, 81, who spent six nights in the bush instead of their planned three, after setting off from Dunphy's campground in the Megalong Valley on Wednesday.

The alarm was raised on Sunday, sparking an extensive search involving rescue squad police, PolAir, Rural Fire Service officers, NSW Ambulance Special Operations and the SES, as well as an Australian Maritime Search and Rescue plane.

Inspector Steve Vuletas from Blue Mountains Police Area Command said contact was finally made with the missing men on Monday night.

Rescuers were able to pinpoint their location and trek into the scrub to rendezvous with the pair by 1am on Tuesday and escort them to safety by 7am.

The pair emerged fatigued but uninjured, near Mobbs Swamp, about 13km from where they began.

"I imagine the family and friends are very grateful that they've been located safe and well and we've been able to get them out healthy," Inspector Vuletas told reporters.

"Given they've been in bushland for three days longer than they prepared for, they must have some experience about them."

Speaking at the end of the ordeal, Mr Umland said the pair had got lost and made slow progress because the established bush tracks they were using had become wildly overgrown after months of unrelenting rain last year.

"There used to be some really good tracks in here," he told ABC TV.

"They are nearly all overgrown now from all the rain and fires we have had and washouts," he said.

Inspector Vuletas said their misadventure was a warning to others planning bush hikes.

"Have a plan, let people know what that plan is and stick to your plan.

"Bring enough resources with you - food, water, the right clothing - and let National Parks and Wildlife Services know as well," he said.

"And of course, as was the case with these gentlemen in particular, bring a fully charged mobile device, perhaps even two of them."
