Gina Rodriguez - Jane the Virgin herself - is back with a new dramedy series in Not Dead Yet. Rodriguez plays Nell, a former journalist who left LA to move to London with her boyfriend. The boyfriend became a fiance and then and ex-fiance, and now she's back home, single, broke and living with her odd-bod roomate and his dog. She scores a job back at her old newspaper, thanks to the advocacy of her friends who still work there, but the only position available is writing obituaries - a gig she feels is beneath her talents. But then things take a turn when the random older gent Nell speaks to at the bar on her birthday is in her bedroom the next morning - but he's not a creep, he's a ghost! That's right, the obituary writer sees the ghosts of her people she's assigned to write about. It's a fun conceit but time will tell if we grow tired of it.

While watching Reese Witherspoon act is always a good idea, sadly her latest rom-com is not in the same league as Legally Blonde, Just Like Heaven or Sweet Home Alabama. Witherspoon (Debbie) stars with Ashton Kutcher (Peter) as two best friends - for 20 years - who live on the opposite sides of the US. They hooked up once when the first met, but have been strictly friends ever since, speaking every day. On the day before Debbie is supposed to head over to New York from LA to spend a week with Peter and get her accounting (maybe? It's not super clear) degree, her babysitter falls through. But, Peter steps up to look after young Jack in LA while Debbie stays at his place. Cue both of them learning some things about the other, making some decisions the other doesn't agree with and realising they love each other. It's about as predictable as a rom-com gets. Bonus points for being soundtracked by The Cars music.

Mix Outlander with Antebellum and you'll come close to Kindred. The inventive and intense show follows Dana, a young Black woman who, on one of her first nights in her new house, finds herself transported back and forth in time, where she's mistaken for a slave on a Southern plantation. It's intellectually terrifying and thought-provoking.
