A fire risk in more than 12,500 Kia vehicles has prompted an urgent recall from the manufacturer.

Kia SLe Sportage and Kia KM Sportage have a manufacturing defect, which could result in an engine compartment fire even when the vehicle is switched off.
"A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants or bystanders and/or damage to property," the recall notice states.

The defect is in the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) of the affected vehicles which could lead to a short circuit if the components being exposed to moisture.
The HECU is responsible for the anti-lock braking system, electronic stability control system and traction control system.

Kia SLe Sportage
- Year range: 2014 - 2015
- Affected units: 12,050 vehicles
Kia KM Sportage
- Year range: 2007 - 2009
- Affected units: 531 vehicles
- Variant applicability: All variants within this model
Until it has been repaired, these vehicles should not be parked near any flammable structures, or in an enclosed area such as a garage.
Owners of these vehicles should contact a Kia Australia dealer to arrange for a free inspection and repair of their car.
