And it's near impossible to do so successfully.
But that's exactly what Jenna Ortega and Tim Burton have managed in the truly excellent eight-part series Wednesday, which explores a teenage Wednesday Addams at Nevermore Academy.
After being expelled from her previous school, Wednesday is determined she will hate and escape from her parents' former school - but little does she know there's a great mystery to be solved, and many lives are in danger.
It's everything the morbid youth could hope for.
The show manages to stay true to the Addams Family vibes while bringing the characters into the 21st century.
Ortega is incredible in the lead and has a truly, truly unforgettable dance number in episode four.
Trusty hand Thing is another scene-stealer, while Wednesday's collection of friends and classmates at Nevermore are a fun gang of support characters.
Also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome and even 90s Wednesday herself, Christina Ricci.
Everything from the costume to the music to the production design and story is divine.
It's no surprise that this has skyrocketed up the Netflix charts across the world.
Not to be missed.
Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin
Stan
It's the spin-off series no one asked for and it performs just as well as can be expected.
Pitch Perfect's over-the-top antagonist Bumper Allen (Adam Devine) gets top billing in this six-episode follow-up to the film trilogy which sees him achieve mild TikTok fame in Germany after posting a mashup of 99 Luftballons and Take on Me.
Flula Borg's Pieter, a minor antagonist character in the second film, becomes Bumper's manager in Germany and is determined to make him a success.
Devine's Modern Family co-star Sarah Hyland is Pieter's assistant Heidi, and the pair work together on a song to storm the charts.
The song - in reality written by OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder - is a bit of a jam.
Jameela Jamil (She-Hulk) plays Bumper's villainous rival Gisela.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
Disney+
The MCU embraces the silliness with their first Christmas-themed special - and it's a winner.
Set on the wacky planet Knowhere, the Guardians - particularly Mantis and Drax - want to cheer Star-Lord up by giving him an Earth-like Christmas.
So they decided the best way to achieve this is to kidnap his favourite star: Kevin Bacon.
It's action-packed, hilarious and filled with fun (and not overplayed) Christmas tunes.
Well worth the watch.
Pepsi, Where's My Jet?
Netflix
If you're intrigued by the title, it's worth giving this four-part documentary series a go.
The fascinating show ostensibly looks at one young man's attempt to force Pepsi to give him a harrier jet after their 1990s TV promotion failed to include a disclaimer.
But it's more than that - it's a look at 90s commercial culture, an exploration of some compelling characters and a spotlight on some of Pepsi's dodgy promotional practices.
The story is told in fun, fresh and frenetic manner - you don't have to be remotely interested in Pepsi to find this series engrossing.
