Senior Constable Foster was a highly regarded Lithgow police officer who died while attempting to rescue a 24-year-old woman from a whirlpool at Mount Wilson in the Blue Mountains in January 2021.
She became the 275th serving NSW police officer to have her name etched into the Wall of Remembrance last year.
Foster, a German Shepherd puppy, will be trained up to provide specialist canine services such as general purpose, drug, firearms and explosive detection and human remains dogs.
"We're overwhelmed really," mother of Senior Constable Foster Marilyn Foster said.
"It was such a wonderful thought. It really was. We still have a Foster in the police force."
The naming of Foster, who came from a line of police dogs, has broken convention as police puppies are usually named alphabetically.
"It's a special name for a special person," NSW Police Dog Squad commander Superintendent Julian Griffiths.
