Texts and emails were sent to some NSW customers just minutes before Sunday's NRL grand final, with an update for those who had their driver licence details hacked.
"Only the licence number on your driver licence was exposed, not the card number," the message said. "Your state or territory government will provide advice on any action that you may need to take."
It took the telco another two days for an update, and on Tuesday morning a follow up text was sent to those same NSW customers.
"Both your driver licence number and card number are required to verify your identity," it stated. "You do not need to replace your driver licence."
But not all customers in that state were so lucky. Around 16,000 NSW people will have to replace their licence, due to the card and driver licence number being hacked.
A national document verification system (DVS) in NSW and some other states, means that both your driver licence number and card number are required to verify your identity.
If you are in NSW and only your licence number was leaked, no action is required
What to do next with your driver licence
The advice differs depending on where you live in Australia.
Around 1.2 million people in Victoria and Queensland will likely have to get a new licence. These states have not adopted the DVS measures.
Vic Roads said anyone concerned can have their licence flagged and protected, while the Queensland Government is replacing affected driver licences for free.
