A federal parliamentary committee has recommended the government investigate how to encourage the fitting to vehicles of event data recorders.

Information from a collision or near miss would subsequently be made available to police.

The recorders track speed, acceleration and braking among other data during and after a crash.

Parliament's joint road safety committee on Monday made 61 recommendations following an inquiry into driving down the road toll.

Committee chair Darren Chester said the causes of road fatalities and injuries were complex and needed "accurate data and high-quality research".

"Road trauma touches the lives of all Australians, whether as victims of a road crash or as family members, friends, first responders, or members of the wider community," Mr Chester said.

The report urges the appointment of a cabinet minister for road safety, with the minister reporting to parliament each year with performance indicators on the achievement of goals in national strategies and plans.

The federal government should work with state and territory governments to agree to a system that would enable the sharing of road safety data, the report noted.

And the government should consider how to expedite mandatory fitting of safety features to heavy vehicles.

Becoming a truckie should also be promoted as a desirable career choice, according to the committee. And there should be incentives for the transport industry to purchase newer, safer trucks.
