The country has reached a key point on the road to getting rid of the harsher sorts of COVID-19 restrictions for good, with 80 per cent of the population over 16 now fully vaccinated against the illness.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison called this "another magnificent milestone".

The mark was a significant one set by the federal government at the start of the push to get Australians vaccinated against the coronavirus disease.

But vaccination rates are still quite uneven across different jurisdictions, with the achievement of Saturday's milestone unlikely to immediately change much, if anything, in the places with the lower rates of protection.

Long-running lockdowns have already ended and border restrictions have been relaxed in some of the states and territories that have individually surpassed 80 per cent, giving the others a glimpse into what their futures will look like once they catch up.

The associated increase in traffic on the roads has prompted police in NSW to urge drivers to slow down, be patient and drive to the conditions.

The warning follows nine deaths on the state's roads this week.

"Please think of others on the road by driving safely," acting Superintendent Ben Macfarlane, the NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Command operations commander, said.

"There is no excuse for behaviour that endangers lives, and those ignoring road safety messages and disobeying road rules can expect swift police action.

"With a wet weekend forecast in some areas, we're also continuing to urge motorists to slow down, be patient, plan ahead, drive to the conditions and keep your eyes on the road."

The same warning would not go astray in other places.
