The forum will be held on Wednesday, May 12, and is an opportunity to get to know nine of the 13 candidates vying for the Upper Hunter electorate in the upcoming by-election set for May 22.

NSW Farmers President James Jackson said the forum will provide an opportunity to delve into some of the key issues facing the electorate, where agriculture has a significant social and economic presence.

"The Upper Hunter is a diverse region where agriculture coexists with other economic engine industries, such as the energy sector," Mr Jackson said.

"Land use will be one of the main issues heading into the by-election, with the co-existence of agriculture and energy generation and the protection of quality agricultural land front of mind.

"Roads and infrastructure, education, and telecommunications will all be important issues for voters ahead of polling day."

The candidates taking part in the forum include David Layzell (The Nationals), Jeff Drayton (Labor), Sue Gilroy (Shooters, Fishers and Farmers), Dale McNamara (One Nation), Sue Abbott (NSW Greens), Eva Pears (Liberal Democrats), Tracy Norman (Independent), Kate Fraser (Independent), and Kirsty O'Connell (Independent).
