There was plenty to like about the new-look Bombers in coach Ben Rutten's first official game in charge since taking over from John Worsfold after a transition year in 2020.

But they were left to rue inaccuracy in front of goal on Saturday night as the Cats slotted the last two goals of the game through the impressive Jordan Clark and youngster Francis Evans to win 12.7 (79) to 9.18 (72).

Former GWS spearhead Cameron was Geelong's biggest off-season signing and, after battling a hamstring strain during the pre-season, he showed some good signs in his all-star partnership with long-time Cats spearhead Tom Hawkins.

The nine-time Giants leading goalkicker booted two second-quarter goals.

"I've been held back a bit after I hurt my hammy slightly so it was just good to get out there with the boys and have a good hitout," Cameron told Fox Footy.

"The body is feeling good and it's just good to get the synergy going down there in the forward line.

"There's a fair bit to work on but it's definitely heading in the right direction and it's exciting for everyone."

Three-time Hawthorn premiership star Smith amassed 25 possessions, while ex-Western Bulldogs and North Melbourne midfielder Higgins had 11 disposals and kicked a goal.

The Cats were also well served by midfielders Clark and Patrick Dangerfield.

After the off-season departures of Joe Daniher (Brisbane), Adam Saad (Carlton) and Orazio Fantasia (Port Adelaide), the Bombers will field a much different looking side in 2021.

Former St Kilda defender Nick Hind, ex-Gold Coast key forward Peter Wright and midfielder Jye Caldwell (GWS) were all among the Bombers' best contributors against the Cats.

Back in the leadership group after surprisingly being overlooked in 2020, midfielder Zach Merrett led the way for the Bombers with a game-high 37 possessions, while Cale Hooker booted four goals.

The Geelong players wore black armbands honouring much-loved club volunteer Vic Fuller, who collapsed at a training session last month and was unable to be revived.

The 79-year-old served the Cats in a myriad of roles over almost 50 years.
