All Blacks coach Ian Foster made three changes to his pack as he looks for a vastly improved performance after their shock 25-15 loss to the Pumas, which was their first to the Argentines ever.

It also came a week after the Kiwis were beaten 24-22 by the Wallabies in Brisbane to put Foster under pressure.

But that will ramp right up if the All Blacks fall again - they haven't lost three Tests in a row since 1998 when they stunningly blew five straight.

Foster said he'd had some "hard conversations" with his players before the McDonald Jones Stadium match against Argentina.

"We have made sure that we have had some hard conversations where we didn't feel that we were up to our level," Foster said on Thursday.

"What happened two weeks ago was we weren't smart enough.

"We didn't use enough of our kicking options, we didn't maximise our opportunities in the early phases and we didn't go to where the space was.

"This is a chance for the group to go out and learn from an experience that didn't go our way and to apply those lessons."

Prop Nepo Laulala replaces Tyrel Lomax in the starting side while Scott Barrett will partner Sam Whitelock in the second row, relegating Patrick Tuipulotu to the bench.

Akira Ioane will start in the No.6 jersey ahead of Shannon Frizell, whose Test debut against Australia in Brisbane was cut short after a prop's red card forced a pack reshuffle.

Foster wanted to give the bulk of the line-up from their latest loss a chance to redeem themselves, while they also have a chance to claim the Tri Nations with all teams on six points.

The Wallabies and Pumas play the final round in Sydney on December 5.

It's exciting in the sense that we have the opportunity to redeem ourselves after our last game, and we also have the opportunity to win the Tri Nations," Foster said.

Among the Pumas changes, lock Lucas Paulos will make his Test debut while Felipe Ezcurra is the new halfback.
