Daily updates of the number of confirmed coronavirus cases are provided for the Hunter New England Local Health District.

But, it is a region that spans from Swansea to the state's northern border.

Mr Crakanthrop said given the "vast geographical area" the community "needed to know" when there were cases in nearby areas.

"It's so important our community remains informed about what is happening," he explained.

"And, each time a new case is reported I hear concerns about where that case may have moved throughout the region before they self-isolated or were tested.

"There's already so much stress and fear surrounding COVID-19, and these kinds of unknowns only escalate that."

Nationals MP Adam Marshall, who represents the Northern Tablelands, which is part of the Hunter New England Local Health District, agrees.

"The information that's being provided by the health district in the public domain is just not sufficient, it's just not enough," he said.

The Southern NSW Local Health District provides a breakdown of confirmed cases by local government area.

It is believed to be the only health district in NSW doing so.
