Established in 1849, Murrurundi Public School has a proud and long history as a central part of the local community.
The school was first known as Murrurundi National School then Murrurndi Superior School and finally Murrurundi Public School in 1968, the name it has retained ever since.
Although its name has changed over the years, the important role it has played in providing the young people of Murrurundi with the essential skills and knowledge for life and the workplace has not changed.
On Saturday, December 14, the community will mark the special milestone with a day full of festivities including a mini fete, carols by candlelight, a cake cutting ceremony and a display of memorabilia.
Murrurundi Public School relieving principal Rebecca Hopkins said the school's P&C will coordinate the fete which kicks off from 3pm.
"The fete will include stalls, a Christmas tree competition, a great tomato challenge, glitter tattoo stall, and more," she said.
"A free barbecue will be put on by the Lions Club as well as a ham wheel and the annual carols by candlelight from 6pm.
"Santa will also be arriving after the carols."
Reaching 170 years is a huge milestone and the school will acknowledge the dedication of all past and present teachers, parents and the local community who have worked hard over the years to achieve quality education for local youth.
