Emergency crews were called to a home at Long Point Road East, near Singleton, at about 9pm on November 13 after reports of a fire in a backyard.
Hunter Valley Police District officers allege a 26-year-old man was burning rubbish in the yard, less than 40 metres from a shed that contained potential accelerants including petrol, oil and fertiliser.
He was charged with failing to comply with a Total Fire Ban and will face Singleton Local Court on January 16.
It came after an unrelated case in Sydney on Wednesday, where police arrested a 37-year-old man who allegedly used a crow bar to lift a section of footpath at Annandale and set underground wires alight.
