About 8pm on September 2, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews from Muswellbrook, Aberdeen and Denman - along with HVPD officers and NSW Ambulance paramedics - were called to a home in Buddens Lane.
Four people were able to self-evacuate, along with nine puppies inside the property.
One woman was treated by paramedics at the scene for chest tightness, but did not require transport to hospital.
FRNSW crews extinguished the blaze a short time later.
The damage is estimated to be approximately $300,000.
Officers from HVPD then established a crime scene.
While the cause of the fire is unknown, police are appealing for anyone with information to contact Muswellbrook Police Station on 6542 6999 or to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
