It launched in Australia in 2011 and, since then, has been embraced by hundreds of thousands.

Last year, Merriwa launched its first parkrun, which was a massive success with 200 people attending the first run, following on from neighbouring Singleton.

Now, Scone is catching up, with its maiden event at Bill Rose Sports Complex on Saturday, August 31.

Everyone is encouraged to join the free, weekly, timed 5km walking/running phenomenon in the park from 8am every Saturday.

Upper Hunter Shire Council sports participation officer Nicole Western said parkrun welcomed anyone of any ability.

"I've done parkrun in England, Newcastle, Wollongong and Merriwa and it's always a supportive, fun event," she explained.

"In Merriwa, the parkrun starts at Rotary Park on Telfer Street, and goes along the river every Saturday morning.

"It's a beautiful area to run.

"The whole philosophy is a welcoming, family-friendly environment.

"Register and your time is emailed to you, so you can keep track of your progress over different runs.

"This project has been in the works for a number of years and it is great that it is finally at the starting gate in Scone."

This project is sponsored by the Upper Hunter Shire Council We LIVE Here campaign funded by the Drought Communities Program.

IMB Bank Hunter/Newcastle, Scone Triathlon Club, Scone Gymnastics Club, Scone Touch Football, Scone Junior Rugby League and Scone Little Athletics Club have all donated to the start-up costs.

BHP has also provided a defibrillator to have on location during events.
