The star of ABC's Gardening Australia and 2019 Gold Logie nominee hosted a workshop focused on sustainability for National Tree Day.
Sharing his insights and wisdom with the more than 150 people present, the vibrant gardening guru spoke of how pleased he was to be in the Upper Hunter ahead of Saturday's Earthfest fundraiser for the local drought-affected community.
"It's a pleasure to come here because I know from my travels what's going on (with the drought)," he said.
"I've been around drought affected areas enough to know the effect is has.
"Drought is a lot more than just windburned land, it's has an emotional human impact.
"The important thing (when maintaining a garden during drought) is to look at the positives of what's in the garden, rather than what's not.
"Because if you start looking at the dead things, the garden can become a depressing place - and gardens aren't supposed to be a depressing place."
The landscape architect won the Logie for Most Popular Presenter this year for his work on Get Grubby TV and Gardening Australia on the ABC.
After visiting local schools that morning, Logie in hand, he said it was important to spread the message of sustainable living to the next generation.
"Touching base with students is a real privilege," he said.
"I love finding different angles to horticulture.
"There's going to be stalls here tomorrow selling succulents.
"And, when you give a kid a plant you give them an experience because they have to look after it.
"It's about shifting away from the material and giving children experiences."
