The tragedy saw three children killed, 11-year-old Blake Atkins and five-year-old twins Scarlett and Matylda Rinkin, while their 31-year-old mother Kara Atkins and her eight-year-old daughter Bayley were rescued by neighbours in the early hours of Wednesday, June 26.

"The boys saw the tragedy on the news and wanted to do something about the situation to help out the community," O'Meley said.

"They approached 'Freddy' (NSW coach Brad Fittler) about raffling the jerseys and donating the proceeds to the family."

NSW is now one game away from capturing back-to-back titles for the first time since Anthony Minichiello silenced the Suncorp Stadium crowd in 2005.

Yet O'Meley, who has remained with the group since Friday as the head coach of the CABE NSW under-20 squad, believes the recent tragedy will remain in the minds of all within his fraternity.

"It impacts the whole community and, as a state, we need to continue to support our country communities to support the families involved," he added.

"It opens up everyone's eyes and it makes everyone realise how easy we have it compared to some situations other people are going through.

"I came down the following day and Danny Buderus tried to come out as well but he was held up with work.

"He's had a big influence in this as well."

"One thing I have always admired about the players is how they put others before themselves and this certainly falls into that category," Fittler told NSWRL this morning.

"What happened to the Atkins family is tragic and I urge all NSW fans to throw their arms around them and help out in what is an extremely difficult time."

Brydens Lawyers' boss Lee Hagipantelis has donated $10,000 to kick-start proceedings.

"When I heard that Brad and the NSW Blues wanted to do something for the Atkins family after the tragedy that claimed the three children, I was moved to help, not as the major partner of the Blues, but as a father," he said.

This initiative has also been appreciated at local level by NRL Upper Hunter development officer Daniel Swan.

"It's unbelievable to be honest, it's touched the hearts of those players and their generosity is absolutely enormous," he said.

"It's been a really heartwarming fortnight for Group 21 rugby league as a whole because of the Where There's a Will round.

"The clubs have come together and looked after each other not just at local level but right to the top level of NRL."
