The year was 1876 and Alexander Bell was successful in making the first phone call, Lieutenant Colonel Custer lost his life at the infamous Battle of Little Bighorn, and the oldest privately owned timber business in NSW opened it's doors. For over 140 years, the Eaton family has owned and operated timber businesses across NSW and Doug and Jim Eaton have continued in that tradition. After starting their careers helping out around the family's timber yard for a generous pay packet of "two bob", the local businessmen have gone on to be the owner of five Mitre 10 franchises.

With stores at Forestville, Ourimbah, Cessnock, Cooranbong and Singleton, along with a manufacturing plant at Mannering Park, the Eaton brothers have been in the timber and hardware industry for their entire lives. Doug said that the move in the late 1970's and early 1980's to join with Mitre 10 was a result of the home hardware trend. "More people starting doing DIY jobs around their homes and doing their own renovations, so the need for tools and products like timber, masonry and other building supplies greatly increased," he said.
With the popular DIY trend continuing to this day and with renovation programs proving a big hit on commercial television, it's safe to say Doug and the team have hit the nail on the head with their latest effort. They are currently in the middle of building new premises for Singleton's Mitre 10, that with an increased size for storage, access and new displays, will benefit both customers and staff.

"The new building will allow us to hold more stock and products, provide more efficient services and give our customers more options than ever before," he said. "we will still be at the same location and we have Tradelink Plumbing moving into our exiting building, which will turn the area into a one-stop-shop for hardware".
With a big "moving sale" happening now, Doug said he and long term store manager Mike Nelson, were hoping to be in the new building by mid-July and were looking forward to a a big store opening along with a bright future.
