The party has promised to provide $40 million over four years to emergency relief organisations across the country, including $123,000 for those in the Hunter.

"Saturday's election is a choice between a Shorten Labor government with a plan for the services our community needs, or more cuts and chaos from the Liberals," Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon said.

"We need real change, because more of the same isn't good enough.

"The Morrison government is cutting the funding for many emergency relief services at the end of the year."

Mr Fitzgibbon said Labor would reverse the government's cuts to local emergency relief organisations by providing $107,000 to the Singleton Neighbourhood Centre.

"We will also deliver a much-needed funding boost to the rest of the sector, including a further $16,000 for Upper Hunter Community Services," he explained.

"These services provide support to vulnerable people who have nowhere else to turn by providing food hampers; funding for fuel to attend specialist medical appointments; and other financial assistance.

"The charities and not-for-profits that do this work are increasingly stretched and need more resources."

A Labor government will also support Australians in financial hardship by:

* Doubling the number of financial counsellors across the country;

* Expanding low-cost alternatives to pay day loans for low-income Australians, providing safe and fair credit options when things get tough; and

* Reversing the government's $5.5 million cut to emergency relief organisations across the country and providing a much-needed top up to the emergency relief sector.

"Many vulnerable Australians are falling through the cracks," Mr Fitzgibbon said.

"Labor will make sure our charities and not-for-profits have the resources they need to support our fellow Australians.

"As the federal Member for Hunter I've had a strong association with Singleton Neighbourhood Centre over many years and have witnessed first-hand the invaluable support it provides to those in need.

"Singleton Neighbourhood Centre is certainly part of the social fabric of Singleton and its surrounding areas.

"Organisations like the Singleton Community Centre and Upper Hunter Community Services make an incredibly positive contribution to our community and should not be taken for granted.

"I'm proud that Labor has committed to reinstating this important funding."
