NSW Farmers is looking to establish a local Young Farmers Group and has put a call out to those working in the farming industry or anyone with an agricultural interest.
The idea came about as a result of a current member in Merriwa and, to generate interest, a social function is being organised at the Scone RSL Club on Wednesday, May 22.
The new group will not only offer the opportunity to meet like-minded people and make new friends but you will have input into advocacy for young farmers and host events to advance the local agricultural sector.
NSW Farmers regional services manager Mick Collins said while it may be called a young farmers group, you didn't have to be a farmer to be involved.
"It's open to anyone aged 18 to 35 who has an interest in local food and fibre production," he explained.
The group will host local meetings to discuss the issues affecting farming and be involved in policy and decision-making processes within the industry.
It will also have a direct input into the NSW Young Farmers Council, which currently has eight other branches throughout the state.
"One of our priorities is promoting the entry into farming through advocating the removal of stamp duty on the purchase of a first farm and low-interest schemes," NSW Farmers senior policy advisor for young farmers Alexandra Bunton said.
The Young Farmers Council has also been involved in improving reliability of telecommunications in the bush, drought preparedness and investigating the viability of alternative energy sources.
Joining the group will give you the opportunity to be involved in activities like the Young Farmer Business Program, Q-Fever vaccination programs and social events.
The Young Farmers get-together will be at Scone RSL on May 22 at 6pm.
Light refreshments will be provided.
A similar function will take place in Tamworth the night before at Joe Maguire's' Pub at 6pm.
