And, on Saturday, March 30, the Victor Serghie-conducted ensemble returns to the Putty Hall from 7.30pm.

One person who is fully aware of the group's popularity is Putty resident Martha Babineau, who has played dorma in the Sydney Balalaika Orchestra.

"They've already performed at the hall four times," she said.

"The Sydney Balalaika Orchestra, with its traditional folk instruments and costumes, takes audiences on an unforgettable journey to the heart and soul of Russia.

"Musical director Victor Serghie and cimbalom player Lucy Voronova's arrangements of classic songs and orchestral pieces are simply breathtaking in their beauty, power and expression.

"Inspired by Vic's free and easy banter, which builds a bridge of friendship between the performers and the audience, the 28-plus orchestra and singers are an eclectic mixture of many cultures (Armenian, Australian, Belorussian, Chinese, Danish, Swedish, Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian), united by their passion for the true Russian folk music.

"Several soloists are acknowledged virtuosos on their instruments."

Along with a busy schedule of performances in and around Sydney, the orchestra has performed in association with Musica Viva at many major folk music festivals and interstate tours.

They were also invited to perform in China, New Zealand and on four occasions in Russia, most recently in a two-week tour of Siberia.

In earlier years, Far East Russia, Moscow and St Petersburg welcomed them.

To attend the show, tickets are $35 each (concert, supper and Russian-style dinner), with children under-14 just $15.

For the concert and supper only, it's $25 for adults and $10 for kids.
