If they happen to be women, so be it.
MACH Energy is a new company, completing the acquisition of its first asset, the Mount Pleasant Operation in August 2016. First coal was achieved just in time for Christmas 2018, with local business AGL its first customer using the coal for domestic power.
"We are joining in this global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women - while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender balance," general manager operations Richard Bailey said. "Among our workforce we have women across a variety of roles.
"We don’t target a statistic, we target the best person for the role and with our mining contractor Thiess and coal handling preparation plant operator Sedgman we have women working across the site in a variety of roles including, mine and plant operators, trades and apprenticeship, finance, site administrators, external relations, coal quality geologist and in the safety and environment teams."
The MACH Energy team on site is a small one, with only 12 full-time employees. One of those is external relations manager Ngaire who has been working in the mining industry across Australia and globally for more than 30 years with companies like Rio Tinto, BHP and Newcrest and was recruited specifically for this role.
"Not because I’m a woman but because I had the skills for this role," Ngaire said. "Mount Pleasant is very close to the town of Muswellbrook. MACH Energy searched for the right candidate with the experience to listen and engage with the community and business.
"I relocated to Muswellbrook for the role and have been here a little over one year. I have experience from the best of both worlds, raised on a cattle and sheep property in Western Queensland and married into the mining life."
MACH has recently appointed Chloe to the position of environmental advisor, she has also relocated to Muswellbrook for the role. Site administrator Lesley, featured below, is a local in the true sense of the word, born and bred in Muswellbrook, she has returned to her home town to take up this very busy role.
