So, it’s fitting after many years as a player, coach and committee member that he now steps into the president’s role for the first time.
And, Wilson’s determined to apply the same principles that he adopted on the playing paddock to his new position.
“I’ve been involved with the Mavericks since I was five, when I pulled on the boots,” he said.
“Apart from a couple of seasons with Quirindi, it’s my ‘home’.
“I’m proud to be the president.
“I love the sport, the town and the club.”
Wilson will be joined by Richard Morris (vice-president), Brett Norman (secretary) and Craig Holman (treasurer) on the Mavericks executive.
Already, they’ve got big plans for the Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League organisation, which boasts two senior sides.
“I have a great committee to work with,” he admitted.
“Although I’d like to thank the outgoing members for their efforts.
“In 2019, we’re changing a few things, including the way we structure our jersey sponsorship.
“It’s all about bringing the community to the club [this year] and the club to the community by supporting each other.
“We’d like to get everyone more involved.
“We’re also offering exclusive opportunities for local businesses to back the Mavericks.
“The committee is hoping to announce its coaches on December 10, too.
“We’ve had a few interested parties apply, which is pleasing.”
Murrurundi endured a mixed season in 2018, with the reserve grade outfit among the competition frontrunners while the league tag side failed to reach the play-offs.
“The boys just missed a berth in the major semi by one point,” Wilson said.
“That would have given us two bites at the cherry.
“Then they played their worst game of the year in the minor semi against Muswellbrook.
“We also lost our fullback at a crucial time, which didn’t help.
“However, we’re not about making excuses.
“The majority of the guys are eager to return because they love playing for the Mavericks – and we’re aiming to go one better.
“As for the girls, they’ll be determined to make amends as well.
“They’re really keen, so numbers won’t be a problem when it all kicks off again.
“Our first goal for both teams are the semis.
“We’ll then go from there.
“But, we’re looking forward to a great season.”
