After being so close to snaring league tag and tackle crowns in recent seasons, the talented group has set its sights on the big prize as round one looms on Friday, November 2.
“We’re definitely targeting the grand final [at Muswellbrook] next month,” coach Matt Morgan said.
“And, if we get there, anything can happen.
“The girls are overdue for a premiership – it would be a good reward for them.
“They’ve been training well [in preparation]; the ones who’ve turned up, at least.
“But, it’s my job to help them develop their skills.
“It is important they learn to stay in the game, hang in there when it gets tough, and back each other up.
“The squad boasts a core of good players – Taylah Blackadder, Jessyca Morgan, Shai Blackadder, Kayla Barry, Maddi Blackadder and Gaynor Blackadder, which we can build a team around.
“So, they already have a few combinations [in place].
“I think we’ll go alright.”
The Magpies open their account against the Aberdeen Tigers at Merriwa’s No 1 Oval, from 6pm.
Muswellbrook will then lock horns with Scone, followed by Greta Branxton and Murrurundi in action.
“Having our first match at home is a bit of a plus,” Morgan said.
“As long, as everyone is ready to perform.
“We’re all looking forward to it – the girls like the physicality a bit more as well.
“Muswellbrook is obviously the main danger, being the defending champions.
“However, I’m expecting a strong showing from Murrurundi and debutants Scone, too.”
Morgan also praised the concept of the Hunter Valley Group 21 Women’s Nines Competition, which enters its third year.
“It’s great – and very entertaining,” he said.
“Women’s league, from the nines format to the NRL, is raw.
“Spectators love the unstructured, off-the-cuff games.”
