That’s how former NRL player Chad Redman is approaching his deal with the Singleton Greyhounds after signing a contract with the Bengalla Hunter Valley Group 21 Rugby League outfit this week.
The ex-Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast Titans hooker becomes the second big-name recruit at the Red Dogs, following the announcement that Sydney Roosters and Canberra Raiders forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala recently inked a two-season contract.
“We’re extremely excited,” Greyhounds president Jye Bayley said.
“Although we’ve got a terrific rake in Thomas Johnson, who finished second in the Group 21 Player of the Year award, Chad is a great addition to our ranks.
“I’m sure we’ll fit him in somewhere.”
Redman, who represented the Australian Schoolboys in 2010, admitted he was no stranger to the Singleton organisation – or its leader Bayley.
“I actually went to the same school (Hunter Sports) as Jye,” he said.
“And, growing up around Newcastle, I kept a close eye on neighbouring competitions, like Group 21, and the Greyhounds.
“I also know a few boys from Aberdeen and Scone.
“So, I’m fully aware of Singleton’s proud tradition.
“I have family there, too – my nan and pop (Roy and Betty Redman) live in town.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge.”
Redman made his NRL debut with the Knights in 2015, scoring a try in that maiden showdown against the Wests Tigers.
The Newcastle junior then moved to the Titans mid-season in his quest for more match time in the top grade.
However, after being released from the Gold Coast, he returned to the Hunter to be “closer to home”.
He's spent the past couple of years in the Newcastle Rugby League.
“I really enjoy my footy but I had to concentrate on a career [away from the game], too,” Redman said.
“Because I’m a dad, I needed a trade so I had something to fall back on.
“I’ll admit, some days, I miss the NRL.
“I’m good mates with Nathan Ross [Knights winger] and it's something we've spoken about.
“I guess I’m in the real world now,” he added with a laugh.
“But, I am proud to have played in the NRL.”
Redman’s keen to impart some of the knowledge he’s gained at the higher level with the “younger guys” at the Greyhounds.
“I guess I’m bringing experience and leadership with me,” he said.
“The club’s got a good crop of juniors, so I’m hoping I can help them along the way.
“Especially in the tight games, show them how to take the bull by the horns.
“Frank-Paul [Nuuausala] is a major coup for Singleton – he boasts 186 NRL appearances and 15 Tests for New Zealand.
“I can’t wait to capitalise on a few of his big runs.
“We’ll start training in December; and I’ll meet most of the guys then.”
