While the little trotters provided plenty of entertainment on the six-race card, the popular event also boosted the coffers of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service again.
Food, drinks, children’s entertainment, market stalls and a visit from a number of former South Sydney greats ensured there was something for everyone at the Denman Recreational Oval.
“We all look forward to this event,” Denman Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service Support Group committee secretary Merry Freeman said.
“More than 1100 people attended in 2017 – and we cleared $22,000.
“The committee was pretty happy with that effort.
“But, it’s always nice to surpass it.
“It is terrific to have the Drought Buster Bus here today, too – thanks to the NRL Rabbitohs, Department of Primary Industries Rural Resilience Program, Hunter Local Land Services and the Men of League.
“We’ve got about 12 ex-rugby league stars – including Joe Thomas, Ross Harrington, Michael Andrews and George Longbottom to name a few – joining us.
“Their role is supporting rural drought-stricken areas by encouraging families to take the day off from their regular routine.
“The players spend time with the kids teaching them skills and offering them training tips.
“They also bring a huge inflatable pass-the-ball stand that is sure to keep the youngsters happy while mum and dad enjoy a relaxing time out.
“I’m sure that’ll be a massive hit.”
