It is believed the 65-year-old male was undertaking maintenance in the boiler room about 12.30pm at the Muswellbrook site when the accident occurred.
The contractor fell somewhere between four and 10 metres from scaffolding.
He was transported to hospital in Newcastle, by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, for a precautionary examination due to the nature of the incident.
The man is reported to be in a stable condition.
“The safety of everyone who works at our sites is vitally important to AGL at all times,” an AGL Macquarie spokesperson said.
“We are currently investigating the circumstances of this incident.”
