With Muswellbrook Ramette Brydie Parker lining up for the Sydney Roosters against the eventual winners Brisbane Broncos at ANZ Stadium, female participation in the format could exceed all expectations in 2018-19.
Regions already confirmed to host events include Illawarra District Rugby League, Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League, Central Coast/Hunter, Group 2, Group 3/Hastings League, Group 16, Group 19, Albury and Group 21.
With recent statistics revealing an annual increase of 28 per cent in female involvement across the state, CRL women’s participation officer Kylie Hilder believes the 9’s are the perfect opportunity for new or returning players to get involved in the game.
“We’re really excited to announce another eight competitions taking place throughout NSW,” she said.
“We’ve been inundated with requests for CRL Women’s 9’s after the success of last year.
“Events such as the Women’s State of Origin and NRL Holden Women’s Premiership have obviously helped to increase exposure in the game, too.
“The addition of women’s tackle into the 2019 Country Championships has created a pathway for players who participate in the 9’s to push for selection in the Country Women’s National Championship side and possibly State of Origin or NRL Women’s Premiership representation.
“So, the opportunities are there if you want to get involved.”
Meanwhile, Group 21 heads into its third season of the CRL Women’s 9’s next month.
The Singleton Greyhounds captured the maiden crown from Muswellbrook, with the Ramettes avenging that defeat 14-12 in 2017.
“Due to the early start of the CRL Country Championships for the under-23s and women’s 13-a-side, we’re conducting our summer 9’s comp in November,” Group 21 secretary Jane Walmsley said.
“The preliminary rounds will take place on November 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, with the final scheduled for December 7.
“Teams must have a minimum of 13 registered players.
“This competition will also be used to select a women’s 13-a-side representative squad.
“The Greater Northern Tigers regional trials are likely to take place in Tamworth in February.
“The CRL Country Championships is hosting rounds on March 9-10 and 16-17, with semis on March 30-31 and the finals at Mudgee on April 6.
“The League Tag Country Championships for under-16s and opens will be held in the July school holidays as a standalone weekend.”
