Taking place at Lake Glenbawn on September 29, the event is set to be as big as ever with more than 100 people potentially participating in the community-driven competition.
The Aberdeen Fishing Club (AFC), sponsored by Keldan Labour Support Specialists, is coordinating the day, which will include a barbecue dinner and a presentation to wrap up proceedings.
AFC member and event organiser Garry Wilton said the support they’d received this year had been enormous, and far eclipsed 2017’s efforts.
“Last year we didn’t really get any sponsorship and it was run by the club itself,” he explained.
“But, in 2018, we’ve got a lot of people on board.
“There’s been plenty of work put in by some people to help us out and get the ball rolling and get it back to the competition it used to be a few years back.”
Wilton also stressed it was open to participants of all ages, from kids to pensioners, and the profits were put to good use.
“It’s a family-friendly fishing competition, in the hope of winning some prizes at the end of it,” he said.
“And, all in order of trying to raise funds to restock the dam with baby fingerlings (baby fish).”
While the full list of prizes hasn’t been revealed yet, he said there would be a fair amount of fishing gear, as well as some cash winnings.
Participants will be catching and releasing, with the winner being whoever snags the longest fish, which is different to previous competitions where they’ve based it off weight.
Despite concerns on social media, Wilton has assured participants there was no need to worry about red spot disease, which was reported in the lake earlier in the year.
The Glenbawn Classic will take place on September 29 between 6am and 5pm; and range in price of entry.
