The annual accolades move into an important stage this week, as assessing starts across NSW in search of this state’s top Tidy Town.
And, Murrurundi will be evaluated in population category A on Saturday and Sunday, August 18 and 19.
Since 1981, the Tidy Towns -Sustainable Communities Program has been invigorating the civic pride, community spirit and environmental commitment of regional communities across NSW.
An award-based initiative, Tidy Towns- Sustainable Communities celebrates the achievements of communities who implement projects that improve their town’s natural, and built environments.
Six towns in rural NSW will be visited during Assessing Week (August 17-25) by volunteer assessor Doug MacDonald.
He’s been assessing Tidy Towns for many years and is experienced at knowing what to look for and understands the hard work that goes into preparation for entering the Tidy Towns- Sustainable Communities Awards.
These communities are competing in the overall category.
The results will be announced from November 9 to 11 at the much-anticipated Tidy Towns Awards Weekend in Orange.
Keep Australia Beautiful NSW CEO Val Southam said Assessing Week for the overall category was an important process that assisted the organisation to ground truth projects submitted by the towns.
Towns which submit a minimum of four projects for the awards in specific categories automatically qualify to be considered for the overall category and, as always, the competition for this honour is hotly-contested.
“The submissions received this year show that many towns throughout the state are developing innovative and resourceful ways of being sustainable in the face of a host of financial, environmental and social issues,” Ms Southam said.
“It’s now time for our trained assessor to look at the projects, meet with the communities and evaluate the overall impact of these initiatives in these six towns.
“We encourage communities to get involved; to show the assessor why their town deserves to win this year.”
As well as the overall state Tidy Towns Award, specific awards will be given in the following categories at the Orange weekend (in each population category):
