LWB operations manager for the Upper Hunter – covering Maitland and Singleton – Nicholas Hedstrom said there were a number of children in the community who were not currently able to live with their families and in need of safe and secure homes.
“We are looking for caring and empathetic couples, individuals and families who can immerse themselves in the care of these children and young people,” Mr Hedstrom said.
“Children in care have often been through difficult life circumstances and may have experienced trauma, so we need carers who have empathy and understanding for behavioral issues that can arise from these experiences.
“Experience working with children in health care or a care support role can also be beneficial when caring for some children and young people with disability.
“If this is something that you’ve thought about doing, but haven’t taken the next step, now is the time to find out more.
“While we are looking for full-time carers, we also need short-term and respite carers – so if you can spare one weekend a month or more, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
“You can make a real difference to the lives of children in your community if you are able to get involved.
“We welcome carers from all cultural and linguistic backgrounds and all types of families – individuals, single parents, same sex couples, married or de facto couples, with or without children – who are willing to open their hearts and homes to vulnerable children and young people in our community.”
Mr Hedstrom said full training was provided, as well as on call support 24 hours a day.
Carers need to have a spare bedroom in their home or apartment so that children can feel safe and secure in their own space.
