Geida Glasby received the Distinguished Award and Florence Thomas collected the Outstanding Service Award during a special presentation at the Aberdeen Sports and Recreation Club on Monday.

Australian Red Cross Aberdeen-Rouchel liaison officer Bruce Johnstone said it was a fitting honour for both women.

“They’re definitely worthy recipients,” he explained.

“And, I’m totally proud the Australian Red Cross gave the ladies the recognition they deserve.

“Geida, who’s 93, has been a member for many, many years.

“A patron [of the club] for the past decade, too, she’s always cooking or selling raffle tickets.

“She is a genuine lovely lady.

“Geida was very proud, and excited, to receive it [Distinguished Award].

“Flo [Florence] has been a member of the Australian Red Cross Aberdeen-Rouchel Club for 26 years; as well as being a leader in organising functions.

“She’s served as liaison officer for many years and is currently our patron.

“Flo is very generous with her personal time and dedication to the club. 

“She became the president when it was a branch – and saved it from closing.

“She was also the driving force when we participated in the Anzac Day march in Aberdeen.”

Mr Johnstone admitted it was hard to keep a small club going these days.

“But, everyone enjoys the camaraderie,” he said.

“We still meet every month, have a cuppa and a chat – and we all look forward to it.

“The members also raised $440 for the Winter Appeal [on Monday].

“They take part in other functions throughout the year, too.

“I guess we’re more about the social [side of things] than the fundraising.

“However, we are still happy to raise money for Red Cross when we can.”
