NSW RFS operational officer Leanne Bell said local brigades had been called to a number of fires in recent weeks.
“Current dry conditions mean landowners and residents need to be very careful when attempting any burning,” she said.
“Even though permits are not required until September 1, you are still required to notify all of your adjoining neighbours and Hunter Valley Fire Control Centre on 6575 1212 with a minimum of 24 hours before lighting.”
The following tips will also assist landowners and residents when using fire:
* Check forecast weather conditions for the day of the burn and for up to four days following lighting
* Delay the burn if winds are forecast
* Create proper fire breaks and clear an area around the perimeters of piles
* Supervise the fire at all times
* Call Triple Zero (000) immediately if fire escapes
Residents and landowners need to take care when using fire and remember it is their responsibility to control the fire so that it doesn’t escape and cause damage.
Operational officer Bell said residents planning to conduct hazard reduction burning should first contact their local Fire Control Centre and check if any approvals are required.
Now is a good time to start preparing your homes and properties for the next bushfire season.
