Muswellbrook, Aberdeen and Denman have major meetings to celebrate their town’s racing history, too – all at the Skellatar Park track.
But, none of them beat the “bush atmosphere” of the Morgans Merriwa Cup, which will take place on Saturday, April 21.
“The hard-working committee volunteers pride themselves on presenting a fabulous country racing experience,” Merriwa Race Club secretary Sue Bayliss said.
“And, everyone looks forward to it every year.
“It is definitely a feature social event on the district calendar.
“We’re always hopeful of attracting 1000 people, but the crowd’s usually 800 to 900, especially as it’s during the school holidays.
“It’s also a great opportunity for the community to get together, with our friends and those who travel in from other areas to join in the fun.”
Bayliss said the Merriwa Racecourse was perfect to host such an event.
“The actual layout of the venue is quite unique,” she explained.
“Racegoers can picnic, socialise and view the action from within the racecourse itself.
“Or, the CWA cafe and bar facilities will offer nourishment.
“Sky Channel televisions provide coverage of other metropolitan TAB races, too.
“There’s also plenty of bookmakers offering punters the challenge of a ‘flutter’.
“Fashions on the Field is a highlight of the afternoon as well, with the guys and gals of all ages keen to show off their style, along with the Calcutta conducted on the Merriwa Cup.
“The once-a-year meeting is arguably one of the longest-established ‘bush’ race days in the country.
“So, we’d like to thank our sponsors Morgans, Godolphin, Merriwa Petroleum & Ag Supplies, Magic Millions, Landmark and Widden for their support.”
Cowans Bus Service’s free courtesy vehicle will pick up racegoers from the Merriwa RSL Club, The Royal Hotel and the Merriwa Sports Club at noon and 12.30pm, returning from the racecourse at 5.30pm and 6pm.
Gate entry is $20 per person while children (under-16) are admitted free.
