Upper Hunter's first Wellness Gym opens in Muswellbrook

MUSWELLBROOK is now home to the Upper Hunter's first Wellness Gym.

Specialist health service provider integratedliving Australia officially opened the facility on Thursday.

The gym, located in Wilkinson Avenue, features specialist HUR equipment from Finland, which is designed to help older people to stay active and well or support people who require exercise as part of rehabilitation.

The equipment uses software programs to monitor customised exercise programs for each user and allow programs to be tailored to customers’ conditions or requirements.

Customers swipe a card on each piece of equipment, which brings up their personalised program and monitors their improvements.

Chief executive officer Catherine Daley said integratedliving was focussed on addressing the challenges experienced by older people in rural, regional and remote communities to live full and independent lives – and some of these challenges include staying active, mentally well and connected to others socially.

The Wellness Gym equipment is designed based-on research findings that resistance exercise helps maintain physical independence and cognitive function and engenders positive mental health and wellbeing.

“Our Wellness Gym is different to the average gym,” Ms Daley said.

“The equipment uses air compression to provide appropriate resistance for older people.

“Customers improve their strength, balance, flexibility, mental wellbeing and have a bit of fun with people of a similar age and fitness level.”

Wellness Gym customers are assessed and supported through their exercise or rehabilitation programs by integratedliving’s exercise physiologist and trained instructors.

One user to give the facility the “thumbs up” is Tim Butler-Jones, who has an acquired brain injury.

“I’ve been utilising it for a few weeks now,” he said.

“I have to do a lot of movement [work], so the equipment has helped strengthen certain areas.

“It’s easy to use, thanks to a personalised card with specialised details, and allows you to re-set your goals.

“Even better, you’re not working out in an intimidating atmosphere.

“It certainly provides the resource I need.”

The Wellness Gym grand opening also featured official proceedings, morning tea and tours of the gym.
