One year out from the NSW state government election, Mr Steers will be saddling up and heading to the big smoke to take part in a statewide anti-coal and coal-seam gas rally #Time2Choose.
Thousands of people from around NSW and the Hunter Valley will march together in Sydney’s CBD to demand action to protect the state’s land, water and cultural heritage.
Part of the rally will include people on horseback to send a clear message to the state parliament to choose a clean energy future.
Mr Steers said coal seam gas is a serious issue and the march will represent the plight of landowners, particularly those in Queensland.
“It’s up to the people to stand up and say we don’t want it,” he said.
“I will be riding on horseback as a concerned citizen and the message I would send to those in the Upper Hunter is to fight it every way we can through peaceful demonstrations.
“And, to landholders, don’t let them on your property.
“I’m passionate about protection of the state’s farmland and water resources against mining companies – especially underground water, which is a big issue.
“I know people from ranches around the The Powder River Basin at southeast Montana and Wyoming.
“They’ve been through it all and seen it all and they come here and simply say ‘don’t let it happen’”.
Led by representatives of Indigenous communities, followed by farmers, graziers, people representing rural towns and urban communities, environmental advocates and health professionals, the #time2choose rally will start at 12pm to 2pm at Martin Place on Saturday.
The rally will be followed by speeches and music.
Mr Steers will join a group on horseback riders who will travel behind rally participants to Prince Alfred Park in the CBD.
