After qualifying at their local tournament earlier in the year, the team – led by PGA professional Steven Slappendel, together with Jeremy Claydon, Corey Fuller, David McLaren and Craig Claydon – held off a host of others to grab the one spot available at the Regional Final, played at Pacific Dunes Golf Club.
The outfit will now compete for the national title at the Holden Scramble Championship Final at Twin Waters Golf Club from May 18 to 21.
“It all started at the 10th hole where one of our high marker players drove to the green on a par four, then the momentum built from there,” Slappendel said.
“It was a real team effort.
“Everyone played well and brought their A game.
“The team is excited about the win and cannot wait to experience the Championship Final that they have heard so much about.”
Holden Scramble Championship Final teams will be treated to four days of golf played in full tournament conditions, three social functions and the chance to rub shoulders with greats of the game such as two-time PGA Tour winner Craig Parry on the final day’s play.
“The PGA of Australia is excited to host the qualifying teams at the Holden Scramble Championship Final,” PGA of Australia national events manager Michael Chard said.
“The Twin Waters Golf Club and Novotel Twin Waters Resort have become synonymous with this event and we know that all participants will have a memorable week.
“All teams have won just by getting to the final.
“They’ve beaten roughly 8750 rivals at the local level and 500 at the Regional Final, to be one of just 30 teams participating in the Championship Final.
“Winning the Final will just be icing on the cake to what is already an unbelievable achievement.”
Since its inception in 1992, the Holden Scramble has become Australia’s largest and most successful pro-amateur teams’ event.
Now in its 26th season, there were 35,000 golfers participating nationally in one of the 460 events staged at golf clubs across the country.
