With NSW State of Origin coach Brad “Freddy” Fittler leading the procession, the former league legends hit the road for the first charity program to be run under the banner of the newly-formed NSWRL Foundation, chaired by ex-NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell.
The Blues mentor, along with Nathan “Hindy” Hindmarsh, Steve “Beaver” Menzies, Tim Brasher, Josh Perry, Ian Schubert and a host of others, dropped into Singleton Outdoors for a bit of fun, before venturing to Scone Park to host a skills clinic with more than 200 youngsters, with the help of the Group 21 organisation.
The code’s greats took time to play touch with the kids, too.
Later that night, the H4H team attended a Sportsman’s Dinner in the Upper Hunter to not only raise funds for Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets, but also for the Scone Thoroughbreds and the club’s Old Boys.
“Everyone’s welcomed us with open arms,” Fittler said.
“We went to Singleton earlier – where one of our sponsors, Toro, has a set-up there.
“The boys had a lawnmower race and we beat the local farmers, so that was good.
“In Scone, we’re meeting the local footy club (senior and junior).
“We’ll run a few drills, say g’day to the fans and sign some autographs.
“We’re also handing out more than 3000 footballs to children in local communities over the next 10 days.”
Fittler, a long-time supporter of Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets, has been the driving force behind the initiative and hopes to inspire other regions in NSW.
“The Hogs For The Homeless tour is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding times of the year,” he said.
“And, it gains more momentum every year.
“We are all really looking forward to getting out there and giving back to communities who need our help the most.
“Sometimes the simple things like meeting people, saying hello and having a conversation can go a long way to inspiring them.”
H4H raises funds through merchandise, auctions and raffle tickets, with the first prize winner to receive a 2018 883 Iron RRP Harley-Davidson motorcycle valued at $15,995.
Since its inception in 2013, Hogs For The Homeless has raised almost $600,000 for Youth off the Streets.
