That’s the message from coach Ben Robins, who’ll guide the reserve grade outfit again.
The Magpies went close to a semi-final berth this year, finishing just four points behind the Muswellbrook Rams, who clinched the last play-off berth.
And, Robins is confident his chargers can improve on that effort, when the competition kicks off in a few months’ time.
“We had a really young side,” he explained.
“There were seven guys under the age of 18, so it was a big learning curve for them.
“The boys never got blown off the park – and matched it with strong teams like two-time premiers Aberdeen Tigers.
“That’s the basis of a good squad.
“Having a season under their belt will help greatly, too.”
Robins said the Magpies were determined to add to their win tally, after chalking up five victories in 2017.
“We got off to a slow start, especially with numbers,” he admitted.
“To be honest, we were struggling.
“But, things improved greatly.
“It should be a totally different story in 2018.
“The signs are very good.
“We’re keen to build on [2017] and take it one step further.
“The play-offs are definitely a realistic goal for the club.”
Robins believes depth won’t be an issue for the Merriwa organisation either.
“I’m happy with the blokes we’ve got,” he said.
“We’re also welcoming Ben Morgan back to the fold.
“Being a five-time [Magpies] Player of the Year, he adds a lot to the side.
“All the lads respect him – and his experience will make a big difference.
“We’ll hit the training paddock again in early January.
“And, everyone’s keen.
“Even though there’s no pressure on the team, there’s plenty of support [within the community].
“I really feel there are good things coming Merriwa’s way.”
