The UHCM board announced her appointment as Jeremy Fletcher’s replacement during the week.
And, Dr Brooks has vigorously dived into the role.
“I’m looking forward to the challenge,” she said.
“I’ve spent some time [over the years] in regional conservatoriums – in a research role.
“I was amazed by the level of enthusiasm shown here, inspired community music-making.
“Honestly, I’ve been overwhelmed by the welcome [from everyone].”
Dr Brooks was actively involved in music education for some 30 years, teaching in primary and secondary schools in the outer western suburbs of Sydney, while simultaneously running a successful piano teaching studio.
Since 2011, she’s lectured and conducted research in Education and Music Education at both Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Western Sydney University.
She completed her PhD studies in 2015 at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, investigating music and screen media in the lives of young children, and maintains a keen interest in Early Childhood Music Education and its importance for future musical learning.
Dr Brooks also developed a strong association with the regional conservatoriums through her research and teaching activities with Sydney Conservatorium.
“I’ve missed the chance to nurture young talent,” she said.
“I’m keen to develop it across the Upper Hunter.
“I’d like to grow Early Childhood Music Education, too.
“That’s where it all starts.”
The new-look UHCM premises at Campbell’s Corner also made an impression on Dr Brooks.
“The facilities and resources are outstanding,” she admitted.
“I’m certainly impressed by the venue – it’s a credit to Muswellbrook.
“New teachers are starting here this term.
“They’ll bring fresh ideas with them – and increase the talent.
“It’s an exciting period for music and arts in the region.”
