But, a few of the changes could hinge on the CRL’s discretionary powers.
It is believed the Quirindi Grasshoppers and Maitland United have shown interest in joining the Upper Hunter-based competition this season.
“We’ve heard from both Quirindi and [Maitland] United,” Group 21 president Simon Walmsley said.
“The Grasshoppers are seeking to field reserve grade and women’s league tag sides, while United is targeting all four teams,” he explained.
“Quirindi is currently on loan to Group 4, so it’s been a while since they’ve played in Group 21.
“Maitland, however, is a new entity.
“Whether they can put together firsts, reserves, under-18s and league tag is up to them.
“And, they’ll need to obtain a clearance from the CRL as well – there are a number of channels to go through.”
Walmsley said Group 21 was shaping up well, especially if Quirindi and Maitland United received the “green light”.
“It would be terrific to see some fresh faces and new teams,” he admitted.
“We’re hoping Merriwa and Murrurundi are back on deck – and, overall, our numbers are up.
“First grade appears strong across the board.
“Scone’s determined to defend their title, while Greta Branxton, Muswellbrook, Denman, Singleton and Aberdeen should provide plenty of opposition.
“It’s still early days but everything’s pointing to a bright year.
“We’re also looking forward to the inaugural women’s CRL 9’s, which kick off next month.”
One modification that hasn’t pleased Walmsley centres on representative qualification.
“For the first time, Group 21 will have an under-23 squad, which in affect replaces the senior side,” he said.
“That’s disappointing for the average bush footballer who still wants to play rep footy.
“In other words, age counts against them.
“The CRL [Country Rugby League] voted on it as a second pathway for kids to make the NRL [National Rugby League], so we’ll see how it pans out.”
